WhatsApp Tests New “Liquid Glass” Design for Chat Interface and Navigation Bar

WhatsApp is currently experimenting with a new visual update that reshapes the chat interface and navigation bar using a modern design approach known as Liquid Glass. This design trend focuses on transparency and layered depth, creating a more dynamic and fluid user experience. It aligns with modern operating system design directions, particularly those seen in iOS 26.

A new interface inspired by liquid glass

The update goes beyond simple visual tweaks and involves a full redesign of elements within the chat screen. A “liquid glass” effect has been introduced to the chat header, making interface elements appear as if they are floating above the background. This enhances readability by using transparent layers and subtle gradients, improving text clarity without visual clutter.

Dynamic interaction with the background

The bottom navigation bar has also been redesigned to follow the same visual philosophy. Icons are now more evenly spaced and balanced, with added soft blur effects that dynamically interact with the app background. This gives WhatsApp a more modern and cohesive appearance, especially on iPhone devices where these visual effects are more noticeable.

Testing phase before official release

Currently, these changes are still under development and being tested in beta versions of the app. The new interface is first evaluated internally, then gradually made available to a limited group of users via TestFlight. Further refinements are expected based on user feedback before a wider official rollout in the future.
