Meta to Shut Down Messenger.com Website in April 2026

Meta has announced that it will shut down the Messenger.com website on April 16, 2026, as part of its broader plan to phase out standalone desktop platforms and redirect users to Facebook’s messaging interface.

Starting on that date, users visiting Messenger.com will be automatically redirected to fb.com/messages, according to reports cited by Al Arabiya. Some users have already begun seeing a message informing them of the upcoming change.

Impact on Users

Although Messenger and Facebook share similar systems and are both owned by Meta, this change will mainly affect users who rely entirely on Messenger for communication. Some users keep inactive Facebook accounts while continuing to use Messenger via the web or mobile app.

After the transition, affected users will need to either reactivate their Facebook accounts or switch fully to the mobile Messenger app. Users without a Facebook account will still be able to continue chatting via the Messenger mobile app. Chat history can also be restored using a PIN after creating a backup, according to Meta.

Reason for the Decision

This move is part of Meta’s ongoing effort to reduce standalone desktop services and streamline its platforms. The company had already discontinued Messenger desktop apps for Mac and Windows late last year.

The decision is also aimed at lowering operational costs by consolidating services. However, it has received mixed reactions, with some users expressing frustration over losing the browser-based Messenger experience, especially for work or casual communication.

Background on Messenger

Messenger was first launched in 2008 as Facebook Chat and became a standalone app in 2011. In 2014, Facebook removed messaging from its main mobile app and directed users to Messenger. Later, in 2023, Meta began reintegrating messaging features into the main Facebook app while gradually phasing out standalone desktop services.
