How to Eliminate Strong Cooking Odors from Your Kitchen

Fish, curry, beef bacon, and garlic—these are ingredients you definitely know can make your kitchen smell less fresh, even if they taste amazing. It can be annoying during cooking, but when the smell lingers for hours or even days, it becomes unpleasant.

In that case, you don’t need to stop cooking these aromatic foods. You only need to adjust your cleaning routine. There are simple ways to get rid of these odors, often using items you already have at home. Here are some tips from cleaning experts and a personal chef.

Vinegar does the job

Vinegar is the ultimate natural cleaning solution, and in this case, it can help eliminate bad odors.

If the smell of fish sticks to your pan or cookware, wash it with water and vinegar. You can also use a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice to wipe down surfaces that came into contact with food, such as countertops or stovetops (make sure to test on a small area first).

Vinegar also helps neutralize odors in the air. Simply place a pot on the stove, fill it with one cup of water and three tablespoons of vinegar, and let it boil for a few minutes. The steam will spread through the kitchen and remove unwanted smells.

Create a pleasant fragrance

Although vinegar neutralizes odors, it has a strong smell itself. If you prefer something more fragrant, you have several options.

You can add a warm cinnamon scent by simmering a pot with three cups of vinegar, one cup of water, and a handful of cinnamon sticks for a few hours. The vinegar reduces strong odors while cinnamon adds a pleasant aroma.

If you are using the same pot used for cooking strong-smelling food, this method also helps refresh both the air and the cookware.

You can also replace vinegar with water and other natural ingredients. Try boiling:

  • Three cups of water

  • One whole sliced lemon

  • One cinnamon stick

Let it simmer for 30 minutes. If ingredients are unavailable, ground cinnamon, oranges, lemons, or fresh mint leaves also work well.

A few drops of essential oils can also help purify the air—such as lemongrass, ginger, or citrus oils.

Brew a cup of coffee

There is a reason coffee beans are used between perfume samples—to reset the sense of smell.

A similar idea works in the kitchen. Placing a bowl of unused coffee grounds in the kitchen can help neutralize strong smells like curry.

For a stronger effect, you can actually brew coffee, including grinding and brewing the beans. This helps mask odors such as beef bacon and garlic as well.

A touch of vanilla is enough

If the oven is the source of the smell, a little vanilla can make the house smell pleasant again.

Simply place a heat-safe cup of water in the oven and add 3–4 drops of vanilla extract. Heat it slowly, keeping the oven at 300°F (150°C) or lower. Within minutes, the kitchen will smell clean and fresh again.

Let fresh air in

This may sound obvious, but it is often overlooked.

If the weather allows, open nearby windows before cooking strong-smelling food. This helps ventilate the space and reduces odor buildup.

Even a small opening can improve airflow significantly compared to fully closed windows.

Check what’s under your feet

Kitchen mats and rugs may provide comfort while cooking, but they often absorb cooking smells.

If odors persist, clean your floor mat. Some mats can be machine-washed or wiped down.

For those that cannot be washed, sprinkle baking soda over them and leave it overnight. In the morning, vacuum it up. This will help remove lingering cooking odors from your kitchen.
