Types of Volunteering

1. Formal Volunteering

Formal volunteering programs are organized and long-term. They require regular attendance, and are managed by supervisors and coordinators who assign, train, and monitor volunteers. They also ensure that volunteers follow policies, procedures, and achieve quality results.

2. Informal Volunteering

Informal volunteering is one of the most common types in local communities. It is usually managed by informal groups or associations and focuses on helping local people in need. Volunteers often see themselves as friends or one big family while working together.

3. Governance and Leadership Volunteering

In this type, volunteers participate in administrative roles such as leadership, planning, and governance within organizations. They take part in decision-making processes and must have basic skills and professional experience related to the organization they serve.

4. Social Volunteering

This type relies on gathering volunteers around a specific cause or shared goal. Volunteers see each other as friends or a group united by enthusiasm toward the cause. Activities may be organized or non-organized, and regular hours are not required.

5. Project-Based Volunteering

Volunteers work within a project that has a predetermined time frame. It requires specific skills to meet goals within set deadlines. It can be part of a formal program or a standalone project, and is managed by coordinators or leaders.

6. Gap Year Volunteering

This type targets young people, especially students during the gap year between school and university. Many join non-profit programs that allow them to travel abroad, live with local communities, and adapt to new cultural environments.

Fields of Volunteering

Childhood and Youth

This field includes activities that prepare children and youth for a better future. Examples include caring for children in orphanages, working in nurseries, and organizing sports activities for youth with disabilities.

Community Development

This is one of the widest fields of volunteering. It includes installing solar panels in medical clinics, improving school facilities, developing water systems, supporting firefighting teams, and more.

Animal Protection and Care

Volunteering in this field focuses on caring for animals, especially those at risk of extinction. Projects may involve caring for wildlife such as elephants, monkeys, bears, tigers, horses, dogs, cats, tropical birds, and reptiles.

Women’s Empowerment

These projects strengthen women’s rights and create long-term positive effects in communities. They improve education, public health, employment, and significantly reduce child and infant mortality, leading to community well-being.

Public Health

Public health programs do not require prior medical experience. Anyone can join and receive the necessary training. These programs focus on health education, disease prevention, nutrition, hygiene, maternal health, and awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Poverty Reduction

Poverty is a major global challenge involving hunger, malnutrition, disease, and limited access to health care and education. Many international organizations run volunteering programs to fight poverty and help provide food, clothing, and shelter.

Sports Volunteering

Sports volunteering requires enthusiasm and interest in sports. Volunteers may be trained by the organization to take roles in coaching, refereeing, administration, organizing sports events, and competitions.
