Android Explains the “Urgent Call” Message on Incoming Calls

Android has revealed the reason behind the appearance of the “Urgent Call” message when receiving incoming calls, explaining that its repeated display depends on a user-enabled option within the Phone by Google app—one of the most widely used calling apps on the Android system.

The app allows users to try an experimental feature known as Expressive Calls, which enables callers to clarify the reason for their call, including whether the call should be marked as urgent or not. Below is a closer look at how this feature works.

Why the “Urgent Call” Message Appears on Android

According to Android Police, the Phone by Google app has introduced a new experimental feature called “It’s urgent!”, which helps users determine the importance of an incoming call.

This feature also allows users to reach their contacts without permanently adding them to a whitelist—even when Do Not Disturb mode is enabled—ensuring that important or unexpected emergency calls are not missed.

When making a call, the app asks the caller whether the call is urgent. If the caller selects the urgent option, the recipient will see an “Urgent” label accompanied by a red alarm icon. If the recipient does not answer, the “Urgent” tag will remain visible in the call log, indicating that the call was not a regular one.

Is the “Urgent Call” Feature Available to Everyone?

According to Android, this feature is still in its experimental (beta) phase and is currently available only to a limited group of users enrolled in the beta program.

To check whether you have access to this feature, go to:
Phone Settings → General → Expressive Calls

If you are not enrolled and wish to join the beta program, you can do so by navigating to:
Google Settings on your Android device → Settings → Google Services & Preferences → All Services → Privacy & Security → System Services
