It appears that YouTube is preparing to reintroduce its private messaging feature to users, especially after it was discontinued in 2019. With the new update, users will be able to share videos—both long and short—directly through the YouTube mobile app, including livestream content.
Although the feature is currently in its experimental testing phase, it is expected to roll out to a larger number of users in the coming period, specifically those aged 18 and older. For now, it is only available to users in Ireland and Poland. YouTube’s decision to revive private messaging after seven years comes in response to high user demand.
YouTube’s New Direct Messaging Feature
Users on YouTube will have the ability to tap the “Share” button to open a full-screen chat window within the app, allowing them to start private conversations—either one-on-one or in groups. The feature will also support replies via text, emojis, and even recorded video messages.
Previously, the only way to share YouTube videos was by sending them through other apps such as email, WhatsApp, Instagram Messages, and others. The platform’s new internal messaging system aims to make sharing easier for both users and the company.
The new feature will also come with a range of tools to ensure user privacy and safety. YouTube will implement standard security measures, including requiring users to send invitations before starting a conversation, along with the options to unsend messages, block others, and report chats.
Why YouTube Removed Messaging in 2019
Back in 2019, when YouTube discontinued the feature, the company did not provide a full explanation. However, speculation at the time suggested that the tool may not have been used effectively.
There were also concerns that the feature could be misused by younger users, potentially exposing them to inappropriate content, as well as broader concerns related to child safety.
For this reason, YouTube’s new version of private messaging will only be available to users aged 18 and over—to better protect minors from harmful or inappropriate interactions.
Feature Will Be Monitored for Safety
YouTube confirmed that the new “Messages” feature will be subject to review to ensure it complies with the same community guidelines applied to videos and comments across the platform.
