OpenAI Launches Sora: A Social Media App for AI-Generated Videos

OpenAI has announced the launch of a new social media app called Sora, which allows users to create AI-generated videos and share them with friends.

This move aims to accelerate the adoption of generative video technology in the same way ChatGPT revolutionized intelligent conversations three years ago.

Sora Available via Exclusive Invitation

The app is currently available to a limited number of users in the United States and Canada and operates on an invitation-only system. Sora leverages an advanced version of the Sora model, which OpenAI first introduced last December.

The app allows users to explore other creators’ content and offers an innovative feature to design a realistic avatar that mimics the user’s appearance and voice. This avatar can then be used in videos for the user or their friends, with consent.

Each user creates a profile similar to other social media platforms, featuring:

  • Follower and like counts

  • A username starting with @

  • Layouts inspired by platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Threads

Additionally, a feature called “Cameo” allows a user to include someone else in a video simply by requesting it in everyday language, provided the other person consents.

Launch Details

  • Initial release: iPhone users only

  • Availability: Free download on the App Store

  • Access: Invitation required to create an account and use the app

  • Future plans:

    • Android release

    • Advanced version Sora 2 on Sora.com

Making Sora a Global Name

With this launch, OpenAI hopes to make Sora a globally recognized app, similar to the impact ChatGPT has achieved, which currently has over 700 million weekly users.
