10 Essential Tips for Your Child’s Oral Health

Since birth, it’s important to establish healthy oral habits for your child to ensure proper dental development and prevent future problems. Here are 10 key tips recommended by dental professionals:

1. Avoid Bottle Feeding at Bedtime

  • Milk or juice left on teeth overnight can cause tooth decay.

  • If your child needs a bottle before sleep, replace it with water or wipe their gums/teeth with a damp cloth after feeding.

2. Start Cleaning the Mouth Early

  • Before teeth appear: Use a damp cloth to clean the gums after feeding.

  • After teeth appear: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with water. Once your child is ready, introduce a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.

3. Limit Pacifier and Thumb Sucking

  • Excessive use may affect teeth alignment and palate development.

  • Transition from bottle to sippy cup as soon as it’s no longer nutritionally necessary.

4. Teach Proper Toothbrushing Technique

  • Assist your child until around age 4–5 and demonstrate correct brushing motions.

  • Make brushing fun with songs, favorite character toothbrushes, or small competitions.

5. Introduce Dental Floss Early

  • Begin flossing once teeth touch to prevent plaque buildup between teeth.

  • Make flossing a consistent part of the daily routine.

6. Be a Role Model

  • Children mimic parents; brush twice daily and floss once daily to set a good example.

7. Promote a Healthy Diet

  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks; include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy.

  • Ensure water intake with fluoride and use fluoride toothpaste.

8. Monitor Teeth Growth

  • Watch for proper eruption timing, jaw alignment, and any difficulty chewing or swallowing.

  • Use mouthguards during sports or swimming to prevent dental injuries.

9. Handle Lost Teeth Properly

  • Teach your child about natural loss of baby teeth and replacement by permanent teeth.

  • If a tooth is lost due to injury, avoid touching the root, store it in milk or salted water, and see a dentist immediately.

10. Schedule Regular Dental Visits

  • Visit the dentist every 6 months for checkups and cleaning.

  • Prepare your child to view dental visits positively to reduce fear in the future.
