Oral Thrush (Tongue Fungus)

Oral thrush, also called candidiasis, is an infection caused by the overgrowth of Candida albicans, a fungus naturally present in the body. While normally harmless, overgrowth can occur due to:

  • Weakened immune system

  • Use of antibiotics or corticosteroids

  • Diabetes

  • Poor oral hygiene

Symptoms

  • White patches on the tongue or inside the mouth

  • Burning sensation or pain

  • Difficulty swallowing if infection spreads to the throat or esophagus

Causes of Oral Thrush

  1. Weak immune system

  2. Poor oral hygiene

  3. Stomach infections

  4. Poor nutrition

  5. Vitamin B12 deficiency

  6. Dry mouth

  7. Anemia

Natural Remedies for Oral Thrush

1. Saltwater Rinse

  • Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water.

  • Swish in your mouth for 1–2 minutes, then spit out.

2. Baking Soda

  • Mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of warm water.

  • Use as a mouth rinse to help disinfect.

3. Yogurt

  • Eat unsweetened yogurt with probiotics to restore healthy gut bacteria.

4. Lemon Juice

  • Mix juice of ½ lemon with a cup of water.

  • Drink or use as a mouth rinse (do not apply directly to avoid irritation).

5. Turmeric

  • Combine ½ teaspoon turmeric with a cup of water or milk and a pinch of black pepper.

  • Heat gently and rinse your mouth while drinking.

6. Oregano Oil

  • Mix a few drops of oregano oil with water.

  • Swish in your mouth for a few minutes, then spit out.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water.

  • Use as a mouth rinse for 1 minute, then spit out.

8. Clove Oil

  • Acts as an antiseptic and pain reliever.

  • Can be used as a supplement or as a mouth rinse by steeping ground cloves in hot water for 5 minutes.

Note:
While these natural remedies may help mild cases, persistent or severe oral thrush should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Oral antifungal medications may be required in more serious cases.
