Meta has announced the launch of its upcoming smart sports glasses, Oakley Meta Vanguard, on October 21, with pre-orders already available. The glasses come in a durable yet lightweight design, tailored specifically for sports activities, and feature standout specifications.
The Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses are water- and dust-resistant, equipped with a 12MP wide-angle camera (122°), capable of shooting 3K video. They also deliver audio that is 6 decibels louder, and come with five microphones for advanced noise cancellation. Battery life lasts up to 9 hours, with the charging case providing an additional 36 hours.
Unlike previous models, Meta has shifted the camera position to the center of the frame above the nose, eliminating issues caused by hats and helmets obstructing the view during recording.
Weighing only 66 grams, the glasses also feature performance data overlays and are fitted with Prizm sun lenses. They support sharing of photos, videos, and other media seamlessly.
Zuckerberg Praises the Experience
During the product presentation, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described his recent experience using the glasses as “amazing,” sharing that he made a phone call while riding a jet ski just a few weeks earlier. At the launch event, the sound quality was so strong that attendees reportedly struggled to hear one another over the glasses’ audio.
Meanwhile, Mike Prospero, editor-in-chief at U.S. tech outlet Tom’s Guide, highlighted that the glasses’ camera “offers a wider field of view, supports slow-motion video, and has water- and dust-resistance rated at IP67, with a battery lasting up to 9 hours.”
