How to Clean Makeup Brushes at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you love makeup, cleaning your brushes is essential. It helps remove makeup residue and also keeps your skin clean and healthy. Follow this simple step-by-step guide to learn how to clean your makeup brushes quickly and easily at home.

Wipe off excess makeup

Before starting a deep clean, take a paper towel or a clean cloth and gently wipe the brush (both handle and bristles). A quick swipe removes a large amount of product and makes the cleaning process easier. You can also gently swirl the brush on the paper towel a few times.

Run the bristles under lukewarm water

Hold the brush with the bristles pointing downward under lukewarm water. This prevents water from flowing into the handle, which could weaken the glue holding the bristles. Gently move and separate the bristles to clean them thoroughly. Avoid hot water, as it may damage the bristles over time.

Mix warm water with shampoo

Prepare a cleaning solution using baby shampoo. Fill a bowl or shallow dish with water and add shampoo. A general ratio of 1:2 (one part shampoo to two parts water) works well. You can also use a makeup brush cleanser if available.

Add olive oil or coconut oil (optional)

If you use oil-based makeup products, adding a tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil can help break down foundation and concealer residue. This is especially useful for natural bristle brushes, as it helps keep them soft and in good condition.

Swirl the brush in the solution

Dip the brush into the cleaning mixture and swirl it for about 20 seconds. The water may become dirty—this means the makeup is being removed. If the brush is very dirty, gently swirl it in your palm to create more lather and clean deeply.

Rinse thoroughly

Rinse the brush under lukewarm water while keeping the bristles pointing downward. Continue rinsing until all soap or shampoo is completely removed. If needed, repeat the washing process for heavily soiled brushes.

Wash again if necessary

For stubborn makeup, repeat the cleaning process. Refresh the solution and clean the brush again until the water runs clear.

Remove excess water

Gently squeeze the bristles using your fingers or a clean towel. Do not twist or rub too hard, as this can damage the brush. Shake off excess water carefully.

Let brushes dry properly

Lay a clean towel on a flat surface and place the brushes so the bristles hang slightly off the edge. This helps them dry naturally without losing shape. Avoid standing them upright while wet, as water may damage the handle. Drying may take several hours or overnight.

Disinfect with rubbing alcohol (after use)

For extra hygiene, spray a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the bristles after each use and gently wipe with a clean cloth. Let the brush dry before using it again.

Deep clean weekly

If you use makeup brushes frequently, deep clean them every 7–10 days. This helps prevent breakouts, bacteria buildup, and keeps your makeup application smooth and flawless.
