Instagram Tests New App “Instants” for Spontaneous Photo Sharing

Instagram is experimenting with a completely different experience through a standalone app called Instants, aiming to redefine how people share personal photos quickly and spontaneously. The app places a strong emphasis on privacy and reducing the “perfect” image often promoted by traditional platforms. It is currently being tested on a limited basis in Spain and Italy.

A Fully Temporary Sharing Experience
The new app is built around short-lived photos. Users can send an image that is viewed only once or remains available for a limited time of up to 24 hours before disappearing automatically. This approach gives users more freedom to express themselves without worrying about content being saved or reshared later.

Simple Use Without Editing
Instants focuses on delivering a simple, no-frills experience. Photos are taken directly within the app without any editing tools or filters, with only the option to add a short caption. The goal is to encourage Instagram users to share real, unfiltered moments.

Strong Competition in the Social App Space
This move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to strengthen private and fast communication tools, amid growing competition from apps like Snapchat and BeReal. So far, no official global release date has been announced.
