Homemade Natural Cleaning Solutions for a Safer and Eco-Friendly Home

If you are concerned about the effects of commercial cleaning products on your health and your family’s health, you can make your own household cleaners using natural ingredients. This can also help protect the environment, save money, and reduce household expenses.

Homemade Multi-Purpose Cleaner Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid

  • 1 cup water

  • About 6 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

Method:
Place all ingredients in a spray bottle, close it tightly, and shake well.

Uses:
This spray can remove greasy fingerprints from painted walls, stains on stainless steel appliances, countertops, and inside the refrigerator. When used with a microfiber cloth, it can also remove dust from baseboards, window sills, and other surfaces. Avoid using it on wooden surfaces.

Note:
If you do not add essential oil, this cleaner can also be used on carpets. Spray it on a microfiber cloth and gently dab the stain. Then fill another spray bottle with clean water and lightly spray the area to rinse off soap residue. Dry the carpet thoroughly afterward.

Homemade Scented Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • Equal amounts of white vinegar and water

  • Lemon peel from one lemon

  • 2 sprigs of rosemary

Method:
Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Add the lemon peel and rosemary sprigs. Close the bottle and shake well. For best results, let it sit for one week before use. You can also add cloves or a cinnamon stick for a different scent.

Uses:
This cleaner helps remove hard water stains, clean trash bins, wipe wall stains, and much more. Lemon peel enhances cleaning effectiveness and adds a fresh scent.

Warning:
Do not use acidic cleaners (such as vinegar-based solutions) on granite, marble, limestone, or travertine, as they can damage stone surfaces. Use caution on stainless steel, as some manufacturers do not recommend vinegar on their appliances.

Homemade Glass Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)

  • 1/4 cup 70% rubbing alcohol

  • 5 drops orange essential oil (optional)

Method:
Add all ingredients to a spray bottle, close it, and shake well.

Uses:
This cleaner leaves windows and mirrors shiny and streak-free. Vinegar removes dust, pollen, and dirt, while alcohol evaporates quickly to reduce streaks.

Note:
Avoid cleaning glass in direct sunlight or hot weather, as the solution may dry too quickly and leave streaks. For mirrors, spray the solution onto a soft cloth instead of directly on the surface.

Natural Stone Cleaner Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol

  • 3/4 cup water

  • 1 teaspoon dish soap

  • 10 drops essential oil of your choice

Method:
Add ingredients to a spray bottle, close it, and shake well. Spray the solution and wipe stone surfaces with a microfiber cloth.

Uses:
Kitchen countertops, bathroom tiles, marble floors, and other stone surfaces require regular cleaning. However, harsh or acidic cleaners such as lemon and vinegar can damage natural stone.

3 Household Tips

  • Always test any cleaner, homemade or commercial, on a hidden area first to ensure it is safe for the surface.

  • Label all homemade cleaning bottles clearly with their ingredients for safety.

  • Depending on how dirty the surface is, you may need to scrub lightly or repeat the cleaning process when using homemade cleaners.
