Om Ali with Ruqaq and Nuts (Traditional Egyptian Bread Pudding Dessert)

Om Ali is one of the most famous traditional Egyptian desserts. It is loved for its creamy texture, rich milk flavor, and the crunch of mixed nuts. It is usually served warm and can be prepared in several ways. This version with ruqaq (thin crispy pastry) and nuts offers an authentic, irresistible taste.

⏱ Cooking Time

60 minutes

🍽 Serves

5 people

Ingredients

  • 4 sheets ruqaq (crispy thin bread/pastry), toasted and broken into medium pieces

  • 1 liter milk

  • ½ cup sugar

  • ½ cup mixed nuts

  • ¼ cup raisins

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 tablespoon shredded coconut

  • A pinch cinnamon (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons butter, cubed

  • 1 can cream (clotted cream or heavy cream)

  • Extra nuts and raisins for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Spread the broken ruqaq pieces evenly in a baking dish. Sprinkle the raisins, nuts, and shredded coconut on top.

  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk with sugar and vanilla, stirring until the sugar dissolves (do not let it boil).

  4. Pour the hot milk evenly over the ruqaq mixture, allowing it to fully soak.

  5. Spread the cream over the top and distribute the butter cubes. Sprinkle cinnamon if desired.

  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and slightly crispy.

  7. Garnish with extra nuts and raisins, then serve warm.

Tip

For an even richer flavor, you can broil for 1–2 minutes at the end to get a beautifully caramelized top.
