Google has introduced a new feature that simplifies joining meetings for Companion Mode users on both phones and tablets. With this feature, users can automatically log into meetings using ultrasound sensing technology.
How the Feature Works
The automatic login works when your device’s microphone detects ultrasound signals emitted by the meeting room’s hardware. This eliminates unnecessary steps and streamlines the process. Currently, the feature is available on Android and iOS devices.
According to the Google Blog, the main benefits of this automatic join feature in Google Meet are:
Easier access to important meetings
Prevention of disruptive echo
Intelligent guidance for the best way to join the meeting
When a sound is detected, Meet identifies your presence in the room using the ultrasound signal and highlights the “Use Companion Mode” button. Clicking the button logs you automatically into the correct meeting room.
Using Automatic Join in Google Meet
For participants: When the ultrasound signal is detected, your entry point in the waiting room for Companion Mode is highlighted. Once joined, you are automatically signed in.
For meeting hosts: Proximity detection is enabled by default, but can be turned on or off for individual rooms.
Checking Device Compatibility
For Android users:
Go to Settings → Apps → Meet → App Info → Version
Alternatively, check via Gmail app: Settings → Gmail → App Version
For iOS users:
Open Meet → Settings → Terms & Privacy → Version
For Gmail, go to Settings → Gmail → Version
This feature aims to make meeting attendance faster, smoother, and more intuitive, especially in rooms equipped with Companion Mode.
