How to Remove Bad Odors from Your Sofa and Refresh Your Bedding

Nothing is more unpleasant than furniture that smells bad, especially if it’s your sofa or your bed and bedding. It’s hard to relax with lingering odors, but fortunately, there are many effective ways to improve the smell of your sofa and refresh your bedding with a clean, pleasant scent.

1. Remove Covers and Air Them Outdoors

If your sofa or mattress has a musty or moldy smell, fresh air is the best solution. Open the windows wide and remove cushion covers or bed linens. Hang them outdoors for a while or wash them in the machine if possible. Fluff pillows before putting the covers back to help eliminate odors. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight for too long to prevent fading.

2. Vacuum Thoroughly

If food is the source of the bad smell, a thorough vacuuming can help. Remove all small cushions and seat cushions, and use vacuum attachments to reach cracks and corners. Regular vacuuming can prevent food particles from causing lingering odors.

3. Use Homemade Fabric Sprays

For odors caused by pets, make a DIY fabric freshener:

  • Fill a spray bottle with distilled or boiled water.

  • Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda, a few drops of your favorite essential oil, or fresh lemon juice.

  • Optionally, add a few drops of rubbing alcohol for antibacterial properties.

For strong odors like pet urine, sprinkle baking soda directly on the affected area, leave it for a while, and then vacuum. Always check your upholstery’s care instructions first, as this may not be suitable for velvet or thick pile fabrics.

4. Steam Cleaning

If covers cannot be removed or the problem is minor, try steam cleaning. Steam has antibacterial properties and can remove odors. Use upholstery attachments and ensure the fabric can tolerate heat. Always vacuum before steaming for best results.

5. Use a Protective Cover

A sofa cover can be a temporary solution to hide odors quickly, especially when expecting guests.

6. Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is excellent for controlling pests like mites and fleas and neutralizing odors. Sprinkle a small amount in suspected areas, leave it for a few hours, then vacuum and dispose of the residue outside. It’s safe to use indoors.

7. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is great for absorbing odors. Avoid sprinkling directly on the sofa to prevent stains. Instead, place it in a small pouch in the corners. For long-term freshness, use DIY sachets filled with baking soda and dried herbs like lavender, rose petals, or rosemary.

8. Hydrogen Peroxide and Dish Soap Solution

For deep stains and odors, mix in a spray bottle:

  • ½ cup hydrogen peroxide

  • A few drops of dish soap

  • 1 cup water

Spray the solution on the affected area, leave for 10–15 minutes to allow the peroxide to break down odors and the dish soap to remove stains. Wipe with a clean cloth, rinse with water, and dry. Use caution on colored fabrics, as it may cause fading.
