Creative Uses for Baby Oil Around the House

When preparing for motherhood, you’ll likely go through many bottles of baby oil to care for your little one. However, many people don’t realize that baby oil has numerous other household uses due to its effectiveness and affordability. Here’s a guide to some unconventional ways to use baby oil at home—just avoid using it on wood surfaces that contact food, such as cutting boards, unlike food-grade mineral oils.

1. Cleaning Shower Curtains

Baby oil is excellent for removing dirt and even mold from shower curtains.

  • Apply 1–2 tablespoons on a cloth and rub the curtain.

  • Rinse thoroughly with water to avoid slipperiness.

2. Polishing Stainless Steel or Chrome

  • Use a few drops on a soft cloth to polish appliances, faucets, or handles.

  • It restores shine and removes minor smudges.

3. Unsticking Zippers

  • Apply a few drops on each side of a stuck zipper.

  • Rub gently with a cloth to make the zipper move smoothly.

4. Caring for Leather Items

  • Baby oil can moisturize shoes, bags, jackets, and furniture.

  • Apply to a cloth first and rub lightly.

  • Important: Test on an inconspicuous area first and avoid pouring directly on leather.

5. Lubricating Locks

  • Put a few drops on the key, then insert and turn it to lubricate the lock mechanism.

6. Silencing Squeaky Hinges

  • Apply 1–2 drops directly to the hinge with a cloth.

  • Open and close the door several times to distribute the oil evenly.

7. Untangling Jewelry Chains

  • Add a drop to a knotted chain and gently loosen it with a pin or needle.

  • Prevents damage while making untangling easier.

8. Protecting Gardening Tools

  • Wipe metal tools with a light layer of baby oil before storage.

  • Helps prevent rust and keeps the tools smooth and ready for use.

9. Preventing Candle Wax Build-Up

  • Rub a little oil inside candle holders.

  • Makes cleaning leftover wax easier.

10. Opening Stuck Windows

  • Apply a small amount to a cloth and wipe along the window track.

  • Open and close the window several times to distribute the oil.

11. Reducing Static on Plastic Surfaces

  • A thin layer on plastic frames or TV screens neutralizes static and adds shine.

12. Cleaning Glass Shower Doors

  • Add a little baby oil to a cleaning sponge.

  • Rub to remove grime, then finish with glass cleaner or diluted vinegar.

  • Dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent streaks.

Baby oil isn’t just for babies—it’s a versatile, inexpensive tool for maintaining and cleaning many areas of your home!
