WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new feature that allows users to securely back up their chats, photos, and voice messages. This is particularly useful if you lose your phone or upgrade to a new device, ensuring that important messages—whether for work or study—remain safe.
WhatsApp is the first messaging app to offer end-to-end encryption for chat backups, keeping your old messages private. The new update makes it easier for users to set up secure backups using personal security keys.
Password-Protected Chat Backups
According to WhatsApp’s official blog, the platform has added an extra layer of security for chat backups. Users can now protect their backups with a password, ensuring that data remains private.
The new feature allows you to use your fingerprint, facial recognition, or standard device lock code to encrypt backups, eliminating the need for a complex 64-digit encryption key.
With a single tap, you can safeguard your personal chats and calls, keeping them both secure and easily accessible. WhatsApp confirmed that the feature will be available to users in the coming weeks.
How to Activate Password-Protected Backups
To enable this feature, follow these steps:
-
Open WhatsApp Settings.
-
Go to Chats.
-
Tap Chat Backup.
-
Select End-to-end Encrypted Backup.
-
Set up your password or use device authentication methods like fingerprint or face recognition.
Additional News: Chatbot Removal from WhatsApp
Recently, WhatsApp announced that it will remove multi-purpose chatbots from the platform. As a result, OpenAI will suspend the use of ChatGPT bots on WhatsApp starting January 15, 2026.
Meta explained that the chatbots placed a heavy load on the system due to high message volume and required a different type of support. However, intelligent bots will still be available in limited cases for WhatsApp Business users.
