World Teachers’ Day is an annual celebration dedicated to recognizing the incredible work of teachers worldwide. It is a time to reflect on the vital role teachers play in shaping young minds—the pride of a nation and the fruit of its pure land. Teachers help students grow and develop, preparing the next generations as the foundation of progress and hope that nations aspire to. They nurture tomorrow’s leaders and builders of the future. Observed every year on October 5, this day is a perfect opportunity to thank teachers for their dedication and the difference they make in countless lives.
Highlighting the Role of Teachers in Education and Society
World Teachers’ Day was established to commemorate the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set international standards for teachers’ rights, working conditions, and professional training. UNESCO officially designated 1994 as the start of this celebration. The goals of World Teachers’ Day include:
-
Highlighting teachers’ role in education and society.
-
Recognizing teachers’ vital contributions in shaping future generations.
-
Improving their working conditions to empower them to give more.
-
Addressing challenges such as keeping up with technological developments and curriculum changes.
-
Training teachers to face psychological and social challenges, including low recognition and performance pressure.
A recent UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) report highlights that only 14% of low-income countries have policies requiring continuous professional development for primary school teachers. Between 2000 and 2024, the report notes:
-
The proportion of trained primary school teachers in sub-Saharan Africa dropped from 85% to 69%.
-
The proportion of trained secondary school teachers decreased from 79% to 59%.
This shortage undermines education quality and equity, often leading to teacher attrition, which further reduces the number of educators across all levels. Although teachers are pivotal in promoting inclusion and innovation in schools and communities, many work without collaborative structures to support and enhance their teaching practices, influence, professionalism, and well-being. Globally, 44 million additional teachers are needed by 2030 to achieve inclusive primary and secondary education. UNESCO encourages youth to choose teaching as a profession of choice.
World Teachers’ Day 2025: Collaboration as the Key to Teacher Success
This year’s theme is “Reframing Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”, emphasizing collaboration as a driver of educational transformation at every stage of a teacher’s career.
Continued inequality in access to professional development prevents many teachers from participating in collaborative learning that enhances their practice and maintains their motivation. Through co-teaching, joint reflection, and integrated partnerships with schools, new teachers can build a foundation of collaboration rather than isolation. As they progress in their careers, teachers can develop collective inquiry and problem-solving skills through communities of practice, study groups, or other forms of collaborative learning.
Collaboration also influences policy development and international initiatives supporting innovation, such as the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development, where active participation from teacher unions and professional associations ensures teachers’ voices are included in education policymaking. Whether through consultation, co-design, or structured social dialogue, involving teachers ensures policies reflect the realities of classrooms.
UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF, and Education International call on governments, partners, and the global community to recognize collaboration as a cornerstone of the teaching profession. Only through effective collaboration at all levels can inclusive, equitable, and resilient education systems truly be built worldwide.
Global Celebration of Teachers
In celebration of World Teachers’ Day, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosted a global event on October 3, organized by the African Union during the African Teachers’ Preparation Conference (PACTED). Numerous events are also planned worldwide to honor teachers and highlight their role in shaping education.
