Basmati Rice with Nuts

A popular dish in Arab and international cuisines, Basmati rice with nuts combines the soft texture of rice with the crunch of nuts like almonds, pine nuts, and cashews, making it perfect for special occasions and gatherings.

Serves: 4 people

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Basmati rice (washed and soaked for 30 minutes)

  • 4 cups water (or chicken/vegetable broth)

  • ¼ cup butter

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • ½ cup mixed nuts (almonds, pine nuts, cashews)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)

  • ¼ cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté onion and nuts

    • Melt the butter in a pot over medium heat.

    • Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and golden.

    • Add the nuts and lightly toast them until golden.

  2. Add rice and spices

    • Add the soaked rice and stir with the onion and nuts for 2 minutes.

    • Pour in water or broth, season with salt, black pepper, and optional cinnamon.

    • Add raisins if using.

  3. Cook the rice

    • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat.

    • Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

  4. Rest and serve

    • Remove the pot from heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes.

    • Fluff gently with a fork, transfer to a serving dish, and serve hot.
