YouTube has started enforcing new restrictions on its Premium Family subscription, tightening eligibility requirements for members. Previously, users could join a Premium Family plan without major checks, but under the new policy, only household members living at the same address will be allowed to stay on the plan.
Enforcement and Notifications
According to Android Authority, some subscribers have already received emails stating their Premium membership will be suspended within 14 days if their home address does not match the family group’s. While flagged accounts will technically remain part of the family group, affected users will lose ad-free access unless they verify their eligibility with Google Support.
Monthly Address Verification
YouTube is now running electronic verification every 30 days to confirm whether family members actually reside at the same location. Those who don’t may lose Premium Family privileges.
This move follows in the footsteps of Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu, which have all cracked down on account sharing. However, given YouTube’s massive global user base, the policy could spark significant backlash once fully enforced.
What’s Next for Premium Users?
Alongside stricter policies, YouTube continues to test new AI-powered features for Premium subscribers. Earlier in April 2025, the platform rolled out trials of an AI-generated video summarization tool, similar to Google Search’s AI Overviews, designed to help users quickly grasp video content.
