What’s New with Circle to Search?

Google has rolled out a new update to its Circle to Search feature, allowing users to instantly interpret any on-screen content on their smartphones through simple gestures like circling, highlighting, typing, or tapping.

The latest addition brings automatic translation, enabling users to hover over unfamiliar words and see them translated in real time. In a blog post, Google noted that “translation is among the most popular uses of Circle to Search.” With this feature, users can gain broader context when browsing content in other languages—for example, identifying restaurant names or reading menus while traveling abroad.

Previously, translations would stop whenever the screen content changed, but now the tool supports continuous translation even while scrolling or switching between apps. For instance, if you’re browsing Instagram and come across images with foreign-language text, Circle to Search will display live translations as you scroll through posts.

How it works

  • Long-press the home button or navigation bar to activate Circle to Search.

  • Tap the Translate icon.

  • Select “Scroll and Translate” to keep translations active while navigating through content.

The feature will begin rolling out to Android devices next week. It was first previewed at Samsung’s Unpacked 2025 event, where Google showcased the updated Circle to Search as part of its effort to make information access and task management smoother and more intuitive.
