It seems Instagram has finally responded to long-standing calls to release a dedicated app for iPad. This means users will no longer need to rely on the iPhone app—poorly optimized for larger screens—or the web version on iPad.
This new step reflects Instagram’s commitment to broadening its user base and providing an improved experience for iPad owners worldwide. The app now defaults to the Reels screen, allowing users to swipe up and watch short videos on a bigger display.
Instagram on iPad
According to TechCrunch, the iPad version of Instagram includes the same features available on iPhone. Stories appear at the top of the app, while a left-hand sidebar gives access to different options such as Following, Direct Messages, Search, Explore, and Notifications.
The main feed includes three categories:
-
All: Recommended posts and Reels from followed accounts
-
Friends: Posts and Reels from mutual accounts
-
Latest: Posts and Reels in chronological order
Users can also reorder these options based on their preferences.
Why the Delay?
Instagram has been around for nearly 15 years, but the company never prioritized creating an iPad-compatible version. For years, Instagram on iPad was just a scaled-up iPhone app.
Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, had previously stated: “The company isn’t in a hurry to build a dedicated iPad version.”
Now, however, Instagram has officially announced its rollout.
Improved User Experience
The new iPad app has been designed to take advantage of larger screens. For example:
-
When watching a video, comments appear neatly on the side.
-
In the Messages tab, you can open a conversation while still viewing your full list of active chats on the left-hand side.
This marks a long-awaited improvement for iPad users, finally bringing a polished and seamless Instagram experience to bigger displays.
