How to Clean Bathroom Slippers

Bathroom slippers can harbor germs and dirt, some of which may not be visible. To keep your slippers clean and safe for repeated use, follow these cleaning tips. It’s recommended to wash them whenever they look visibly dirty or at least once a month.

Cleaning Leather Slippers

  1. Use a Gentle Leather Cleaner: Apply a mild, skin-safe soap or leather cleaner to the outer parts of the slippers. You can use the same cleaner you use for leather shoes to remove dirt and scratches. For slippers with leather interiors, clean the inside in the same way.

  2. Polish the Leather: After cleaning, use a soft cotton cloth to polish the slippers and wait about five minutes.

  3. Moisturize: Apply a leather conditioner to keep the slippers soft and supple. Natural leather absorbs conditioner better than synthetic alternatives.

  4. Clean the Interior: Use baby wipes or a slightly damp towel with a drop or two of wool or baby shampoo to clean the inner lining. Use another damp towel to remove excess soap.

  5. Air Dry: Let the slippers dry naturally. You can place newspaper inside to absorb excess moisture and speed up drying.

Cleaning Cotton Slippers

Machine Wash:

  • Use warm water (not hot) to prevent shrinking.

  • Set the washing machine to a gentle cycle to avoid deforming the slippers. If using a normal cycle, place slippers in a laundry bag.

  • Dry on low heat or let them air dry.

Hand Wash:

  • Fill a basin with warm water and a small amount of mild detergent.

  • Soak slippers for 10 minutes. Gently scrub, rinse thoroughly, and repeat if necessary.

  • Remove excess water by pressing gently—do not wring to avoid deforming them.

  • Let them air dry or use a hairdryer on a low, warm setting to fluff the soft inner lining.

Cleaning Suede Slippers

  1. Use a Suede Cleaning Kit: Clean the outer surface using the kit’s brush and eraser to remove stains. You can also use a nail file or fine sandpaper for mud or scratches. This restores the texture of the suede.

  2. Protective Spray: Apply a water-resistant spray safe for suede to make future cleaning easier.

  3. Clean the Interior: Use baby wipes or a slightly damp towel with a drop of wool or baby shampoo to clean the inner lining. Wipe again with a clean damp towel to remove any residue.

  4. Air Dry: Let suede slippers dry naturally. Avoid direct heat from a dryer. You can stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and speed up drying.

This ensures your bathroom slippers stay clean, hygienic, and ready for repeated use.
