WhatsApp to Show Number of People Typing Simultaneously in Group Chats on Android

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is rolling out an update for Android users that will display the number of participants currently typing messages in group chats. Previously, when multiple people typed at the same time, WhatsApp only showed one member’s name in the chat list. This made it impossible for users to know if others were also active without opening the group chat.

The new feature replaces the single name with a dynamic line indicating how many people are typing, for example, “2 people typing,” according to the tech news site WABetaInfo. However, this applies only to typing text messages, not to recording voice messages. If multiple people record voice notes simultaneously, the chat list will still show only one person’s name.

This feature is currently available in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android and is expected to be released to regular users within the coming weeks.

Brief Background on WhatsApp

WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former Yahoo employees. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, the app was acquired by Facebook (now Meta) in February 2014 for $19.3 billion. By 2015, it became the world’s most popular messaging app, reaching over 2 billion users by early 2020. It is a primary communication tool in regions such as Latin America, the Indian subcontinent, Europe, and Africa.
