Google Prepares to Launch New AI Feature That Makes Phone Calls for You

Google is gearing up to launch a new AI-powered feature that allows users to make phone calls without speaking directly to a business representative. Development of this feature began in January 2025, when the company introduced a way for users to get information about prices or availability via AI, eliminating the need to make phone calls themselves.

Currently, the feature is available only in the United States and enables communication with local businesses such as pet groomers, dry cleaners, and auto repair shops. For example, if a user wants to contact one of these businesses to inquire about services or prices, AI will handle the entire conversation on their behalf.

AI Replaces Traditional Phone Calls

According to The Verge, the feature is specifically designed for younger users who often feel uncomfortable making phone calls. Once a user searches for a business, a new option appears under the listing:
"Have AI check pricing".

The AI will then ask about the type of service needed, the preferred time, and how the user would like to receive updates (email or SMS).
Roby Stein, Vice President of Product for Google Search, said that Google is using its Duplex model powered by the Gemini system to carry out these calls.

Stein emphasized:

“Gemini, powered by Duplex, will be able to make calls on your behalf.”

He also clarified that this tool does not impersonate the user. Instead, it will introduce itself as a Google AI system acting on behalf of a customer, and will collect the required information and pass it on—saving time and effort. Once the information is collected, the AI automatically sends a text message update with available times or pricing.

AI-Powered Smart Search Feature

Google has confirmed that business owners can opt out of receiving AI phone calls via their Google business profile settings. On the other hand, users who subscribe to Google AI Pro or AI Ultra can access extended features and wider usage options.

Additionally, Google is currently testing Gemini 2.5 Pro, its most advanced AI system to date, which was announced in May 2025. This tool is especially beneficial for users seeking help with advanced reasoning, mathematics, and programming.

The company is also exploring a deep search feature powered by AI, which would allow users to have the AI generate in-depth reports on any idea or topic they have in mind.
