AI and Women: Have You Found Your Perfect Friend in ChatGPT?

Artificial intelligence is quietly creeping into the most private corners of our personal lives: our feelings and relationships. As more women admit they turn to ChatGPT in moments of confusion and emotional breakdown, it’s worth pausing to ask: Are we dealing with a real friend? Or just a talking mirror reflecting back our own thoughts?

Your Friend Who Never Tires

Imagine having a friend who never gets angry, never judges, never reminds you of your mistakes, is available anytime, and gives you the full space to talk about yourself. Sounds tempting—maybe even ideal. But this “friend” isn’t human. It’s called ChatGPT, which has quickly evolved into a digital best friend for many women around the world.

Since its launch in 2022, ChatGPT has gone beyond a technical tool to become an emotional companion, helping with writing messages, thinking out loud, and even trying to understand complex romantic relationships. According to a University of Toronto study, 54% of participants felt the AI’s responses seemed more empathetic than those of a real person.

A Temporary Safe Space—No Substitute for Real Relationships

Some turn to ChatGPT because they don’t want to bother their friends with the same stories repeatedly—ChatGPT never gets tired. But psychotherapist Esther Perel warns against the illusion of connection in the digital age, calling it “masked loneliness.” Having a thousand online friends can’t replace a real friend knocking on your door when you’re sick.

Writer Robert Brooks, author of Artificial Intimacy, explains that people are drawn to AI because it never embarrasses them, reminds them of their faults, or betrays their secrets. Yet, it lacks the rich, challenging relationships that nurture and shape us.

Brooks points out that while ChatGPT’s advice may always sound encouraging, it doesn’t spark real change because it never says, “Enough,” or “Try thinking differently.” It gives you what you want to hear—not what you truly need.

The Digital World Forgets... and Also Doesn’t

Though ChatGPT doesn’t keep permanent conversation records, as the platform assures users, technology’s evolution may change that one day. Over-trusting AI could open doors to unexpected risks. The data we share with these tools maps out precise portraits of ourselves—portraits that might someday be used in ways we wouldn’t approve.

Women Between Digital Support and Emotional Isolation

ChatGPT may offer superficial warmth and immediate support, but it remains a tool devoid of genuine reciprocity. It doesn’t err, but it also doesn’t share your pain, remember your history, or grow with you. So, if your relationship with AI feels comfortable, that’s understandable.

However, don’t forget that real friendships thrive on feelings, differences, confrontation, and even silent moments. Use technology to your advantage—but never let it replace your heart and your true relationships. Despite human flaws, people remain best equipped to feel, empathize, and face life honestly.
