WhatsApp is testing a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature aimed at summarizing unread messages in individual chats, group conversations, and channels within the app. While a similar AI-powered notification summary feature is already available on select Apple devices, most iPhone users cannot currently take full advantage of it.
With the announcement of this new WhatsApp feature, the message summarization tool will be available on all Android devices, since the AI technology is integrated directly into the WhatsApp application. There is no confirmed information yet about whether it will be rolled out to iOS devices.
AI Summarization of Unread Messages on WhatsApp
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently testing AI-generated summaries on Android through a feature called “Private Processing.” Once activated—especially when there’s a large number of unread messages—a new button appears labeled “Summarize with Meta AI,” replacing the usual "unread messages" notification.
When users tap the Summarize with Meta AI button, a summary of the conversation is displayed, allowing them to prioritize which chat to respond to first.
Privacy and Security Measures
To reinforce user privacy and security, WhatsApp confirms that none of the messages are stored or linked to the user. All processing takes place in a secure, isolated environment, and the summaries are deleted immediately after they are generated.
When Summarization Is Disabled
WABetaInfo also noted that AI-powered message summarization is automatically disabled in chats with advanced privacy settings, even if end-to-end encryption is enabled. This ensures that AI does not interact with highly private conversations, further supporting WhatsApp’s commitment to user confidentiality.
Gradual Rollout and Future Plans
Currently, the feature is available to a limited group of users in the beta version for Android, with a gradual rollout expected. WhatsApp has not yet disclosed any plans regarding availability for iOS, supported languages, or regional compatibility.
It’s worth mentioning that WhatsApp is also developing another AI-driven feature called “Writing Help,” which aims to assist users in improving message structure, correcting errors, and formatting text before sending. Like the summarization tool, Writing Help will also rely on the Private Processing infrastructure to ensure user privacy.
