Maamoul with Dates (Eid Cookies)

Maamoul is a famous type of sweet in many Arab countries, especially popular during Eid. It can be made in different ways with various fillings such as dates or nuts, and shaped into various sizes and forms.

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 5 cups flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 2 teaspoons ground mastic

  • 2 tablespoons Maamoul spice mix (Dakkat Maamoul)

  • 2 tablespoons black seed (Nigella seeds)

  • 200 grams butter

  • 1 cup vegetable oil

  • 1/4 cup rose water

For the filling:

  • 500 grams date paste

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Preparation Steps

  1. Mix the flour with baking powder, ground mastic, Maamoul spice, and black seed.

  2. Melt the butter with the cup of vegetable oil, then pour it over the flour mixture and stir. Add rose water and knead the ingredients until you get a smooth and cohesive dough.

  3. For the filling: pour the oil over the date paste, add nutmeg and cinnamon, and knead well.

  4. To prepare the Maamoul: fill the dough with the date mixture, shaping it as you like or using ready-made molds.

  5. Bake the Maamoul in an oven preheated to 180°C (356°F) for 15 minutes.
