Google Introduces Virtual Try-On and AI-Powered Shopping Features

In a remarkable step paving the way for a qualitative shift in digital shopping, the tech giant Google is developing a virtual clothing try-on feature. Instead of seeing how clothes look on a variety of models, this new feature allows you to upload a photo of yourself to see how the clothes would actually look on you.

Smart Shopping Feature

This virtual try-on technology lets users upload their own photo to see how clothes really fit them, rather than relying on generic models. This represents a breakthrough in visual shopping, as the experience is no longer limited to preset models but becomes fully personalized. Smart shopping takes your preferences into account and performs tasks on your behalf.

Currently, the feature is only available in research labs in the United States. Once you choose to try it, you can click the “Try it on” button next to pants, shirts, dresses, and skirts appearing in Google search results. Google will then ask for a full-length photo of you, which it will use to create an image of you wearing the clothing item you are interested in. You can also save and share these images.

Fully Protected Feature

Google explained that this feature uses an AI model that understands the human body and clothing differences, such as how different fabrics fold, stretch, and fit on various body types.

Regarding the photos users upload, the company confirmed they remain fully protected and are not shared with any external parties, in compliance with the highest standards of privacy and transparency.

AI-Powered Shopping

The company also announced that soon it will enable users to shop using an AI-powered mode, called “Gemini,” which started rolling out to more users in March. For example, if you tell the AI mode you’re looking for a new travel bag, it will automatically show a customized board of images and product listings.

You can narrow your search by providing more specific details, such as needing a bag for a trip to Portland, Oregon, in May.

According to Google, the AI mode conducts multiple searches simultaneously, allowing it to identify features suited for rainy weather and then display results that meet those needs, like waterproof fabric and extra pockets.

New Payment Feature

Google will also offer a new “Agent” payment feature to U.S. users in the coming months. Currently, when you click “Track price” in a product listing, select size, color, and your desired price, Google will notify you when the price drops to your preferred amount.

This new feature will also allow users to confirm purchase details, then choose a “Buy for me later” option. Google will complete the payment securely on the retailer’s website on your behalf, using Google Pay.
