Spicy Shrimp Biryani Recipe

Biryani is a famous dish from Indian cuisine that has become popular worldwide. This spicy shrimp biryani is a perfect choice for seafood lovers who enjoy a bit of heat. Try this easy recipe and serve it to your family with their favorite salad.

Serves: 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Basmati Rice
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Medium Onions (sliced thinly)
  • 2 Medium Onions (finely chopped)
  • 2 kg Shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 4 Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 cup Fresh Dill (finely chopped)
  • 3 tbsp Curry Powder
  • Chili Powder (to taste)
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 5 Green Cardamom Pods
  • 3 Chicken Bouillon Cubes
  • 1/2 cup Hot Water
  • 2 cups Fresh Coriander (coarsely chopped)
  • 6 cups Water
  • 2 tbsp Ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 tbsp Saffron (powdered)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Ground Black Pepper (to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Rice:

    • Wash the rice and soak it in cold water for 30 minutes.
  2. Cook the Onions:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Fry the thinly sliced onions until they turn brown, then remove and set aside.
    • In the same pot, add the chopped onions and sauté until softened and golden brown.
  3. Cook the Shrimp:

    • Add the shrimp to the pot and cook for about 5 minutes until they turn pink.
  4. Add Spices and Sauce:

    • Stir in the tomato paste, minced garlic, dill, curry powder, chili powder (if using), cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, chicken bouillon cubes, and hot water. Let it simmer for a few minutes before adding the chopped coriander.
  5. Cook the Rice:

    • Boil 6 cups of water in another pot. Add the soaked rice and cook for 10-15 minutes. Drain the rice and remove any excess water.
  6. Layer the Biryani:

    • In the same pot, melt the ghee. Add a layer of rice, followed by a layer of the shrimp mixture and a sprinkle of saffron powder. Repeat the layering until all the rice and shrimp mixture are used up.
  7. Steam the Biryani:

    • Cover the pot and steam the biryani on low to medium heat for 20 minutes until the rice is fully cooked.
  8. Serve:

    • Serve the spicy shrimp biryani on a plate, garnished with the fried onion slices. Serve hot with your favorite salad.
