Google is working to enhance the security of Android smartphones with a new feature called "Identity Check." This feature aims to protect personal data from theft or hacking in the event of a lost or stolen device.
With "Identity Check," users can secure their digital data by preventing unauthorized access in case their phone is stolen. The feature allows users to define safe areas where they can easily unlock their device, while requiring biometric authentication to disable the "Identity Check" and allow access to certain device settings and accounts.
According to Google, "Identity Check" will first roll out on Pixel phones and Samsung devices running One UI 7, followed by support for other Android devices like OnePlus 13, with Android 15. Google emphasized that a stolen device in the wrong hands could expose sensitive data, leading to identity theft, financial fraud, and privacy violations, which is why they introduced the feature.
Apple has a similar feature called Stolen Device Protection. With Google's new feature, protected settings include the ability to change your PIN, disable anti-theft protection, turn off "Find My Device," reset your device to factory settings, and modify biometric data, as detailed in the support documentation.
In addition, Google introduced a "Theft Detection Lock" feature in August 2024. This feature uses AI algorithms to detect suspicious activity related to theft. If the device senses patterns that indicate theft, it will immediately activate the lock, helping prevent unauthorized access.
It's a strong step towards enhancing smartphone security and protecting users' personal information. Does this new feature sound useful to you?
