The popular messaging platform WhatsApp has announced a new feature called Guest Chats, allowing users to start conversations with people who do not have a WhatsApp account. The chats can be accessed via an invitation link, which can be opened in a browser without installing the app.
Key Details of the Feature
Invite via Link: Users can generate a chat invitation link from within the app and share it through text messages, email, or other apps. The recipient can open the link and join the conversation directly as a guest.
Temporary Guest ID: When opening the link, the recipient can choose to download the app or continue as a guest via a web interface similar to WhatsApp Web. A temporary guest ID is created, allowing the conversation to start without creating an account.
End-to-End Encryption: WhatsApp confirmed that all guest chats remain end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that only participants can view the messages.
Currently, the feature is being tested with a limited number of users on Android and iOS.
