How to Build and Strengthen the Habit of Reading

Many of us delay developing a reading habit—whether for pleasure or learning—because we feel short on time, or simply because we haven’t built the right routines to make reading a natural part of our day. Life’s responsibilities—work, family, and endless to-do lists—often push reading to the bottom of our priorities. But what if you could turn reading into a daily joy, a steady habit, and a lasting part of your lifestyle?

"Sayidaty" interviewed writer Abdulrahman Al-Ruhaimi, a member of the Arab Internet Writers Union, who shared practical, motivating strategies on how to cultivate a consistent reading habit.

Reading: A Joy Like No Other

Al-Ruhaimi explains that reading is an unmatched source of joy and growth. It opens the mind and heart to worlds of ideas, enriching experiences, and timeless knowledge. Through reading, one escapes the chains of ignorance and walks the path of wisdom, understanding, and clarity.

Despite knowing its value, many people struggle to make reading a daily habit. They may feel that reading adds pressure to their already busy lives—when in fact, it does the opposite: reading eases stress, lifts the spirit, and offers comfort and renewed energy.

So how can you truly build a lasting reading habit?

Effective Strategies to Develop a Reading Habit

1. Set Simple Daily Goals

Instead of viewing a book as a large, intimidating whole, break it down into pages or chapters.
Create a realistic reading goal—either by time (30–60 minutes daily) or by number of pages (e.g., 5 or 10 pages).

Keep in mind:
Some books need slower reading, so adjust your goal based on the type of book.

2. Create a Reading Corner

If you often read at home, set up a cozy reading nook—a comfortable, quiet space free from distractions.
A dedicated reading space enhances comfort, creativity, and imagination, making you more likely to pick up a book every day.

3. You Don’t Need a Lot of Time

Even if you can’t spare an hour, small pockets of time can build a habit:

  • During your commute

  • While waiting for appointments

  • During lunch breaks

  • Any moment you normally spend browsing your phone

Replacing a few minutes of screen scrolling with reading can transform your routine.

4. Start Small and Build Up

Don’t begin with a heavy or complex book. Start with short stories, magazine articles, or lighter books.
Consistency is the secret. Challenging yourself too early can discourage you. Ease into reading, then gradually increase difficulty.

5. You Don’t Have to Stick to One Book

If a book feels slow or overwhelming, it’s okay to set it aside temporarily.
Alternate with lighter reads—like novels or thrillers—to maintain enjoyment and avoid burnout.

6. Read What You Love

If reading becomes a chore, its magic is lost. Choose books that genuinely interest you—whether educational or entertaining.
A book that sparks curiosity is always worth your time.
