Many people suffer from constant tiredness and fatigue — a condition that should not be ignored, according to a medical expert who warns it could be a sign of a debilitating hidden illness.
Dr. Meely Rajzada, a General Practitioner with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) specializing in hormone health, stated that while feeling tired over extended periods isn’t always a reason for concern, it becomes worrisome if it persists for several weeks, especially if triggered by light physical activity, such as climbing stairs or doing yoga.
She urged individuals experiencing this kind of exhaustion to consult a medical specialist, as it may indicate a condition called Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM). This condition affects approximately 250,000 people in the UK and is linked to sleep disturbances, difficulty thinking, concentrating, and remembering.
Speaking to the Huffington Post UK, Dr. Rajzada explained that many patients struggle to live a normal life because the symptoms limit their ability to work and engage in daily activities, and diagnosing the root cause of fatigue can be challenging.
She noted:
"Fatigue lasting more than six months meets the diagnostic criteria for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). But even fatigue that lasts a few weeks should not be dismissed."
An early medical evaluation and blood tests can help identify potential causes. Additional symptoms may include:
-
Cognitive difficulties (e.g., memory problems, poor concentration)
-
Unexplained muscle or joint pain
-
Frequent headaches
-
Dizziness or heart palpitations
