Why Young People Feel Stuck and How to Move Forward

Young people are constantly seeking progress—it is a measure of growth. Progress is achieved through success, a sense of stability, and self-fulfillment. However, many obstacles can prevent this advancement without them even noticing the reasons behind it.

According to experts, most young people feel stuck in the same place and believe they are not moving toward their dreams. While this perception may not reflect reality, it clearly affects their mindset and motivation.

Reasons for Feeling Stuck

Dr. Helen Abi Aad, a clinical hypnotherapist, art therapist, and laughter yoga instructor, shared the main reasons young people feel they aren’t progressing and warned against getting trapped in them:

1. Fear

Fear is often the first obstacle. This includes fear of failure, fear of trying, fear of change, and fear of others’ opinions. Many postpone their dreams to stay in a “safe zone,” even if it leads to no growth. Dr. Helen explains: “Most successful people experienced failure before reaching where they are today. Fear is often an illusion created by the mind, not reality.”

2. Clinging to the Past

Some individuals dwell on past painful experiences, failures, or lost opportunities. Constantly replaying the past steals energy and prevents seeing new possibilities. Dr. Helen emphasizes: “The past cannot be changed, but you can learn from it. Those who remain trapped in memories find it hard to build their future.”

3. Low Self-Confidence

Lack of belief in one’s abilities leads to hesitation, self-doubt, and constant comparison with others. Dr. Helen notes: “Confidence does not mean perfection; it means believing you can learn and improve, no matter how simple your start.”

4. Lack of Clear Goals

Many young people live without a plan or vision. Without a clear goal, motivation fades quickly, and challenges feel overwhelming. Dr. Helen explains: “Goals act like a compass—they guide steps and give reasons to continue.”

5. Negative Environment

Even with motivation, a discouraging environment can hinder progress. People who constantly say, “That’s impossible” or “Stay in your place” can influence mindset unconsciously. Surrounding yourself with supportive, encouraging people is crucial.

6. Procrastination

Waiting for the “perfect time” or “ideal conditions” often leads to inaction. Success begins with a small step, even if imperfect.

How to Break the Cycle of Feeling Stuck

Awareness

The first step is acknowledging what holds you back honestly, without excuses. Then comes the decision to change, even if it feels difficult.

Start Small

Take small actions—develop a skill, read a book, organize your time, take care of your health, or learn something new.

Consistency

Progress is a long journey of trial and error. You don’t need to be perfect, but perseverance matters. Every small step, no matter how minor it seems, brings you closer to your goals.

Dr. Helen concludes: “It may not be other people or circumstances holding you back, but the thought inside you that says, ‘I can’t,’ or ‘It’s too late,’ or ‘Success is only for others.’ When you change this thought, your path changes entirely.”

Ask yourself today: “What is stopping me?” and “What small step can I take now?” That small step might be the beginning of a new path toward a better life.
