Dawood Basha Kofta (Turkish Meatballs in Tomato Sauce)


Dawood Basha Kofta is a famous traditional Turkish dish that combines flavorful seasoned meatballs with a rich, well-balanced tomato sauce. It is usually served with white rice or Arabic bread, making it a comforting and popular main course for family meals.

Ingredients

For the Kofta (Meatballs)

  • 500 g ground beef

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped

  • 1 teaspoon mixed spices

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 3 cups tomato juice or tomato purée

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • Pinch of salt

  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

1. Prepare the meatballs

In a bowl, mix the ground beef with onion, parsley, mixed spices, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

2. Shape

Form the mixture into small, evenly sized meatballs.

3. Fry

Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the meatballs until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.

4. Make the sauce

In the same pan, heat the remaining oil.
Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.

5. Add tomatoes

Stir in tomato paste for 1 minute, then add tomato juice, salt, and pepper.

6. Simmer

Let the sauce come to a gentle boil, then return the meatballs to the pan.

7. Cook

Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, until the meatballs are fully cooked and the sauce thickens.

8. Serve

Transfer to a serving dish and serve hot with:

  • Fluffy white rice, or

  • Fresh bread
