Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Home Espresso Machine

Is your new home espresso machine looking dirty? Learning how to clean it properly ensures you get the best results and maintain its performance. By following the right steps, using the proper tools, and applying helpful tips, you can minimize maintenance time while keeping your machine in top condition. Here’s a detailed guide on cleaning your espresso machine.

Step 1: Gather Cleaning Supplies

Before starting, collect all necessary materials:

  • Soft, clean cloths

  • Cleaning brush

  • Cleaning solution (if recommended for your machine)

Step 2: Empty and Rinse Drip Tray and Water Reservoir

  • Empty and rinse the drip tray and water reservoir daily, or after every 30 uses.

  • Remove any leftover coffee grounds to prevent residue buildup and bad odors.

  • Regularly replace water and remove limescale deposits to prevent damage or reduced performance.

Step 3: Clean Coffee Filters and Portafilter Baskets

  • Over time, coffee oils can accumulate on the filter and portafilter, affecting espresso taste.

  • Scrub filters with a brush or cloth; for stubborn residue, soak them in a cleaning solution for 5–10 minutes.

  • Rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly before reassembling.

Step 4: Backflushing the Machine

  • Backflushing ensures rich espresso and extends machine life.

  • Procedure:

    1. Turn off the machine and unlock the group head.

    2. Remove the coffee basket and insert a backflush disc or blind filter.

    3. Place a small container under the group head to catch excess water.

    4. Run short bursts to build pressure inside the group head.

    5. Add a teaspoon of espresso machine cleaning powder to each chamber, replace the basket, and secure it.

    6. Run the pump for 10 seconds, pause, press the sides of the basket for 5 seconds each, then run again for 10–15 seconds.

    7. Remove the basket and thoroughly rinse with warm water until no foam remains.

Step 5: Clean the Steam Wand

  • Always clean the steam wand after each use to remove milk residues.

  • Steps:

    1. Turn off and unplug the machine.

    2. Wipe the wand horizontally with a damp cloth.

    3. For stubborn residue, use a soft brush.

    4. Rinse with hot water, dry with a clean cloth, and reattach.

Step 8: Reassemble the Machine

  • Reattach the coffee filter to the group head and secure it.

  • Place the drip tray back in position.

  • Refill the water reservoir with filtered cold water.

  • Turn on the machine and adjust any settings (grind size, dose) as needed before making espresso.
