December 8: Celebrating Brownie Day Around the World

On the 8th of December each year, brownie lovers across the globe indulge in one of their favorite baked treats on Brownie Day.

Chocolate brownies are a beloved dessert worldwide, followed closely by the blondie. A blondie is made using brown sugar without chocolate and is often referred to as a “blondie brownie.”

Dubai – Lina Al Hoorani

Some of the earliest known brownie recipes were published in cookbooks and regional newspapers at the start of the 20th century. Early examples include:

  • Laconia, New Hampshire Home Cookery (1904)

  • Chicago, Illinois Service Club Cook Book (1904)

  • The April 2, 1905 edition of The Boston Globe

  • In 1906, Fannie Merritt Farmer published a recipe in an edition of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book

There are three legends behind the invention of brownies:

  1. A cook accidentally mixed melted chocolate into cookie dough.

  2. A baker forgot to add flour to the batter.

  3. A housewife improvised when she ran out of baking powder and served flat cake squares to guests.
